School of Criminology and Crime Science (SCCS)

The School of Criminology and Crime Science, Raksha Shakti University seeks to integrate theory, research, and practice in the fields of criminology, criminal justice, victimology, security studies, criminal justice social work and crime sciences. This integration also translates into students who are well-prepared for field-oriented jobs as well as higher academic pursuits. We believe that theory, research, and practice should interact not just in the classroom but also in the field. With this in mind, the School takes a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach to advancing academic and practice-oriented research and publication goals. Our goal is to place the School of Criminology and Crime Science, Raksha Shakti University at the forefront as an international, national and regional source of expertise and education related to criminology, criminal justice, victimology, security studies, criminal justice social work and crime sciences.

The School of Criminology and Crime Science, Raksha Shakti University seeks to develop students that will positively impact both the public and private agencies in international, national and regional levels. Positive impacts will occur because our students are learning in an environment where faculty are actively engaged in theorizing, researching, publishing and promoting excellence in practice as well as in the classroom. Also, the integration of international faculty members and practitioners in teaching our students broaden their vision and develop them as holistic individuals.

The School of Criminology and Crime Science, Raksha Shakti University is a newly established School and one of the few Schools at University level offering programmes in Criminology in Western India. The School of Criminology and Crime Science, (RSU) offers programmes in Criminology in the level of Masters’, MPhil, PhD. The School currently has two full-time permanent faculty members in the rank of Professor (Dean) and Assistant Professor and has multiple supporting faculty members from the neighboring Schools like Law, Police Administration, Forensic Sciences, Cyber Security etc. The School also had three Criminologists (Consultants) on board who provided consultancy services to the Ahmedabad City Police. The School also boasts to have top level Criminal Justice Professionals as visiting faculty members and it is also supported by academics from various other elite universities. All the students of the School undergo internship with various criminal justice institutions, NGO’s and Security Organizations. Also, hands on training in Crime Analysis, Crime Mapping and Research Methodology are provided to students. The Programmes of Criminology are job oriented and many of the students have been placed in Security agencies, NGO’s, Private Detective, Policing and Academia.

a. MA in Criminology / MSc in Criminology and Crime Science

Master of Arts (M.A.) Degree Programme in Criminology is a Two Years programme under semester pattern, with Choice Based Credit System with two specializations viz, 1. Criminal Justice Social Work, 2. Security Studies, with an intake of 30 students. Graduates from any discipline can take up this programme. This Master’s programme consists of: Core courses and Elective courses which are compulsory for all students; 40% of the Courses have a practical Component, built into the syllabi. Internship and Dissertation/ Project are compulsory and included as core. Students have to undergo internship during the Vacations in their chosen area of specialization/interest. MSc in Criminology and Crime Science will be offered from July 2020.

b. MPhil in Criminology

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) Degree course in Criminology is a One Year (Two Semesters) research degree programme under semester pattern, with Choice Based Credit System with an intake of 10 students. Post Graduation in any discipline can apply, however, persons with MA Criminology will be preferred. This M.Phil Research programme will consist of: I Semester: 3 courses – II Semester 1 course and 1 Dissertation. Students will be encouraged to write research papers and present at Conferences and Publish articles/papers. The MPhil programme is governed by RSU MPhil Regulations.

c. PhD in Criminology

PhD in Criminology is a three-year programme and both full time and part time programmes are offered. The PhD programme is governed by RSU PhD Regulations.

The “Criminologists Development Forum” (CDF), a student run forum of the School invites experts from various fields and conducts series of Lectures called “Crime and Justice Lecture Series”. First lecture of this series was delivered by Professor Bimal N. Patel.

Trained (Embedded) Criminologists (Consultancy Project with Ahmedabad City Police). Three ‘Trained Criminologists’ were appointed in January 2017 in Raksha Shakti University, Ahmedabad under a MoU signed between the University and the Commissioner of Ahmedabad Police. These three Criminologists worked in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Police to help police perform evidence-based policing. In January 2017, three Criminologists were appointed on 12 months contract at the University. These 3 Criminologists were placed under the guidance and Supervision of a Police Officer and an academic criminologist. The task was defined for each of the Trained Criminologists based on their expertise and interest in research areas. The Trained Criminologist Program was supervised by Shri Vikas Sahay IPS, Additional Director General of Police & Director General (I/c) of Raksha Shakti University and Professor K. Jaishankar.

The findings of patterns of crimes against persons were presented before the Commissioner of Ahmedabad City Police on 14th July 2017 to adopt and promote result oriented and evidence-based policing. The initiative taken up by the Raksha Shakti University, Ahmedabad of recruiting Trained Criminologists is with a vision to ensure safer communities and mission to utilize Criminological expertise in assistance of effective crime preventive policing in Ahmedabad City. The aim is also to engage stakeholders of CJS to promote services of Criminologists in other districts of Gujarat as well. This shall open up opportunities for many young Criminologists in India who will become part of the CJS machinery. This model will open the channels for exchange of criminological knowledge for synergizing the efforts of academicians and Police for safer communities. The Trained Criminologist initiative by RSU is a symbolic representation of a Criminologist’s utility in a system. Through this exercise, not only the importance of a criminologist in a system shall be highlighted but it shall positively reshape the developmental process of Criminology in India.

Jaishankar is a United Nations Expert (Honorary) to create a Handbook for Victims of Terrorism in Asia-Pacific and he contributed in three Closed Experts Group Meeting (EGM) organized by United Nations Office of Counter – Terrorism at Singapore City, Singapore during 18-20, June 2019, Seoul, South Korea during 27-29, March 2019, and Bangkok, Thailand during 26-28, February 2019.

b. Professor K. Jaishankar was the Program Director of the Trained (Embedded) Criminologists (Consultancy Project with Ahmedabad City Police).

c. Professor K. Jaishankar and Dr. Divyashree provided their expert academic services to the DySP probationers of Karai Police Academy.

a. Innovations in Teaching and Learning
  • Steps will be taken to invite both international and national experts to deliver Lectures via Skype.
  • High Quality Course Material will be prepared to enhance the quality input from the students in the exams and other related activities
  • A Student Exchange programme will be initiated both within the country and outside the country. MOU’s in this regard will be worked out.
  • A student forum by the name “Criminologists Development Forum” (CDF) is already initiated and in this forum, experts will be invited weekly to deliver lectures and it will improve the personality and attitude of the students.

b. Organizing Conferences and Workshops
  • “Crime and Justice Lecture Series” with renowned experts will be conducted frequently. First lecture of this series was delivered by Prof. Natti Ronel, School of Criminology, Bar Illan University, Israel.
  • Short Term Courses for the Police Officers in the discipline of Criminology which will be organised every year.
  • One day Seminar on ‘Issues in Criminology Teaching and Research’ will be initiated.
  • Funding from ICSSR will be sought to organize Research Methodology programmes / workshops in Criminology for 10 days / 15 days duration.

c. Industrial Visits

Industrial visits for a period of 20 days are already provided in the Course curriculum of Criminology. However, now the revised syllabus will have more practical components and this will include one week industrial visit / field visit for many core subjects that will have a practical component.

d. Research Activities by Students and Faculty Members
  • Research projects will be undertaken at the State and National Levels
  • MOU with many funding agencies such as BPR&D, ICSSR and other international agency will be initiated to receive research projects.
  • Students will be encouraged to prepare research papers and present in international and national conferences and also, they will be assisted by the faculty members in publishing articles in international and national journals.

e. Mentoring students for In- House and other professional Exams

Mentoring students for In- House and other professional Exams will be done in the academic year. One hour every day, the students will be provided coaching for NET/ JRF. Also, One Hour every day, the students will be provided English Remedial Classes to increase their performance in the M.A. Course as well as the Competitive Exams.
