About Dr. (Cdr) Arnab Das,
Arnab Das is an Indian Navy Veteran with over two decades of active services spread over sea tenures, R&D assignments, training duties and dockyard exposure. He has delivered multiple strategic R&D projects and made pioneering contributions towards innovative indigenous technology development and strategic formulations. He has done his Master’s and PhD from IIT Delhi on underwater signal processing and has close to hundred papers and a book on underwater technology and maritime strategy to his credit. He has reasonable academic and research exposure in globally recognized labs like the Institute of Industrial Sciences at Tokyo University and the Acoustic Research Lab at the National University of Singapore.
He continues his academic and research activities through his association with institutes as a visiting professor and has been guiding research students. His passion is to engage the young generation to the UDA concept and channelize their energy towards making India a strong maritime nation.
Maritime Research Centre (MRC): He has founded the MRC in Feb 2017, for progressing the Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA) framework for facilitating Safe, Secure and Sustainable Growth in the tropical littoral waters specifically in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The MRC has been able to establish itself as a technology driven think tank and is being recognized as a unique institute well aligned with the contemporary global geopolitical focus on the Indo-Pacific Strategic Framework and also the national vision of Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR). MRC has been undertaking numerous activities to address the three pillars of Policy, Technology & Innovation and the Human Resource Development.
NirDhwani Technology Pvt Ltd (NDT): The MRC as a not-for-profit entity, is well complemented by NDT, a start-up with niche expertise in underwater acoustics and signal processing. NDT has unique capabilities of field work supported by formal naval colleagues and also deep research backed by his academic and research colleagues. NDT undertakes turn-key projects and deliver complete solutions for complex problems under the UDA framework. Acoustic Stealth Management, Underwater Radiated Noise Management, Noise Prediction for Marine Platforms, Noise & Vibration Analysis, Acoustic Habitat Degradation Management and more are some of the core expertise.
Vision for the Future of UDA Framework: Arnab has a lifetime dream of realizing the UDA framework for ensuring safe, secure, sustainable growth for India and the IOR. The MRC and NDT facilitate the realization of the UDA framework in a very effective manner and in the most comprehensive manner. Going forward the realization of the UDA framework will require the following
Training Centre: The stakeholders need to be made aware about the challenges and opportunities of UDA, if India has to be in the next league of developed nations. Lots of awareness workshops, seminars and training sessions with hands-on exposure need to be organized with best infrastructure. Mass in-flow of multi-disciplinary professionals and practitioners will have to be handled to encourage peer learning and synergy.
Research Centre: High end multi-disciplinary research has to be supported with close interaction with academia and research institutes both within and abroad. Large scale modelling and simulations complemented by field experiments will be the key.
Incubation Centre: The industry has to get involved and participate in the evolution of UDA in an effective manner. Start-up with innovative and agile capabilities and the larger groups with adequate infrastructure, need to participate equally. The incubation centre will translate the research ideas into the workable business models and useful products for varies stakeholders.
Strategy Centre: The strategy centre has a key role in policy advocacy and shaping thought leadership to ensure smooth interaction between the multiple stakeholders. Pooling of resources and synergizing of efforts need massive coordination between the research, training, innovation, strategic vision formulation and much more will have to be seamlessly coordinated.
