About Cdr. Dr. Kovit Talasophon,

Cdr. Dr. Kovit Talasophon J.S.D., of the Royal Thai Navy, is a Visiting Research Scholar and J.S.D. Graduated at the University of Maine, School of Law. His interested is also included Law of Armed Conflict, Law of the Sea, Law of Air and Space, and Maritime Security. His J.S.D. research is the Law of Armed Conflict at Sea and Submarine Warfare. Commander Talasophon has worked as the Head of the Operational Law Section, Legislation Division, for the office of Naval Judge Advocate General for 4 years and has worked for the Operation Law and The Law of Armed Conflict at Sea for Royal Thai Navy for almost 16 years. He was the acting Head of the Planning Section in the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Royal Thai Navy for 2 years. Commander Talasophon lecturers on the Law of Armed Conflict, Law of the Sea, Air and Space Law, Law of the Air and Sea Enforcement, Rules of Engagement, and Law for the Use of Force at the Line Officer School, and the Naval Staff College at the Institute of Advance Naval Studies (now part of Royal Thai Navy Education Department) and the Surface Warfare School from 2000 until now. He was a member of the Adjunct International Faculty (AIF) for the 2010 and 2011 International Law of Military Operations (ILOMO). Previously Commander Talasophon was the Maritime Operational Law Advisor attached to the Deputy Prime Minister’s Secretary (National Security Section) in Prime Minister Tuksin Shinawara’s government for 3 years. His deployments include being the team leader for the Legal Training Unit in support of the naval and marine operations in the southern part of Thailand. In 2010, he served as the Legal Advisor with the Royal Thai Navy Anti-Piracy Task Unit, which operated in the Gulf of Eden and Somalia Basin and was the Planning Officer for the Combined Maritime Force (Bahrain). Commander Talasophon graduated from Ramkhamhaeng University in Thailand (LL.B in 1995), and earned his first LL.M in Criminology from the University of Edinburgh in 1996 and a second LL.M in the Law of Armed Conflict from University of Hull in 1998. He attended the National Security seminar at the National Security Law Institute, University of Virginia in 2008. In 2009, he attended the Royal Thai Navy Staff College. He is married to Mrs. Phuttida Talasophon and is the father of three sons and a daughter (age 21, 12, 8, and 4 respectively)
